M12 Hybrid SPE Cable for Actuators and Valve Islands
Last updated: 7 September 2026
A m12 hybrid spe cable puts two single pair ethernet contacts and two or four power contacts into one M12 shell. It is the answer to an awkward gap: single pair ethernet is excellent at connecting a small sensor at the end of a long run, and much less useful for a valve island, an actuator or a small drive that needs the same data link and considerably more power than a data line can carry.
Why the hybrid exists
PoDL works well up to the power a sensor or a simple positioner draws. It stops working as soon as the device contains solenoids, a motor or a heater, because the current the data pair can carry is limited by the conductor size and by the need to keep the data clean. Rather than run a second cable, the hybrid interface adds dedicated power contacts alongside the pair: one connector, one strain relief, one routing path and one part number where there would otherwise be two. The hybrid mating face is described in IEC 63171-7, and the M12 hybrid arrangements sit alongside the codings in IEC 61076-2-113; confirm the applicable version before you design to either.
Where it pays for itself
- Valve islands where the bus interface and the solenoid supply would otherwise be separate cables
- Actuators with position feedback that need both a data link and a real power feed
- Machine modules that are swapped as a unit, where one connector halves the changeover time
A market that has not settled yet
This is the part of the range where we are most careful with numbers, and you should be too. Hybrid single pair ethernet is recent and the contact arrangements and power ratings differ between suppliers. Published competitor data gives voltage and current classes that depend entirely on how many power contacts the shell has and what cross-section they accept.
Specifying one
Start from the load, not the connector. Add up the steady current and the inrush of the solenoids or the motor at the far end, work out the voltage drop over the routed length, and let that decide the power contact count and the cross-section. Then check the data side: the SPE segment has to be terminated into equipment that expects the same power class and pinout.
What we can and cannot tell you today
We will quote shell style, contact arrangement, jacket compound and length without hesitation. The voltage, current, temperature and ingress ratings for this range come from competitor literature and remain pending supplier datasheets. Where you need a number for a sizing calculation, we will get the document rather than estimate.
