Engineering Support & Design for Manufacture Review
The cheapest engineering mistake to fix is the one caught before steel is cut. The most expensive is the one found at first article, when the tool exists and everyone is invested in it being fine.
HKWIRE is a custom cable assembly manufacturer and OEM/ODM supplier in Longgang, Shenzhen. The design for manufacture review is done by the engineers who will cut the tooling and run the line, which is why the questions come back before steel is cut rather than after.

DFM review costs you nothing and it is the part of the process most suppliers skip.
What the review covers
- Interface
- Insert retention, mating clearance, keying, available molding envelope, and whether the specified connector can survive the molding process at all.
- Cable exit
- Direction, minimum bend zone, strain-relief length, and whether the exit path fits the installation it will actually see — not the one on the drawing.
- Material
- Flexibility, bonding behavior between jacket and overmold, temperature range, chemical and UV exposure. See the overmold material options.
- Tolerance
- Which dimensions genuinely need to be tight, and which are costing money for no functional reason.
- Shielding and grounding
- Where the shield terminates, whether 360° termination is achievable, drain wire routing and bond method.
- Validation
- What has to be proven, to what limit, with what sample size, and what report format your approval process requires.

- A short written list of open questions, each with the reason it matters
- Risk flags on any feature that is likely to cause trouble in production
- Alternatives where a specified feature works but costs more than it needs to
- A recommended construction if you asked us to propose one
We also tell you what we cannot do. Test limits, tolerances and documentation availability are confirmed at quotation, with the conditions stated — so there are no surprises at final inspection.
Where a DFM review changes the outcome
Three recurring examples from real enquiries: a shielding specification that could not be terminated consistently by hand, replaced with a construction that can; a ±0.1 mm tolerance on a dimension with no functional requirement, relaxed and removed from the cost; and an overmold geometry that trapped air at the insert, caught before the cavity was machined rather than after T1.
None of these are exotic. They are the ordinary result of someone reading the drawing with the process in mind.
Engineering review from the people who will run the tooling
The review is free and comes with every quotation. Because the tool room and the molding floor are in the same building as the engineers, a question about exit geometry or shrinkage gets answered against the actual process instead of a rule of thumb.
What we can build leaves our factory tested to IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 workmanship criteria under an ISO 9001 certified quality management system, with 100% continuity and pinout testing on every unit. What we cannot do, we say at quotation — test limits, tolerances and documentation availability are confirmed up front, with the conditions stated. Audits, in person or by live video, are welcome.

Does the DFM review cost anything?
No. It comes with every quotation, with no obligation, and you keep the questions whether or not you order from us.
How quickly do we get the questions back?
With the quotation. If a question blocks the quote, we send it immediately rather than holding the price back until we have every answer.
Will you redesign my part?
No. We flag risk and offer alternatives where a specified feature costs more than it returns, then build whichever version you approve. Changes are never made silently.
Can you propose a construction from scratch?
Yes. Give us the interface, the environment and the target cost, and we will come back with a recommended construction and the reasoning behind it.
What happens after the review?
You approve the construction, and we move to prototypes and first article inspection, or straight to production if the design is already proven.
Do you work as an ODM partner, not just a builder?
Yes. Where there is no frozen design, we propose the construction as an ODM manufacturer and supplier, and build it in our factory in Shenzhen; where there is one, we build it as your OEM supplier.
