Engineering Support & Design for Manufacture Review

The cheapest engineering mistake to fix is the one caught before steel is cut. The most expensive is the one found at first article, when the tool exists and everyone is invested in it being fine.

DFM review costs you nothing and it is the part of the process most suppliers skip.

What the review covers

Interface
Insert retention, mating clearance, keying, available molding envelope, and whether the specified connector can survive the molding process at all.
Cable exit
Direction, minimum bend zone, strain-relief length, and whether the exit path fits the installation it will actually see — not the one on the drawing.
Material
Flexibility, bonding behaviour between jacket and overmold, temperature range, chemical and UV exposure. See the overmold material options.
Tolerance
Which dimensions genuinely need to be tight, and which are costing money for no functional reason.
Shielding and grounding
Where the shield terminates, whether 360° termination is achievable, drain wire routing and bond method.
Validation
What has to be proven, to what limit, with what sample size, and what report format your approval process requires.

  • Risk flags on any feature that is likely to cause trouble in production
  • Alternatives where a specified feature works but costs more than it needs to

Where a DFM review changes the outcome

Three recurring examples from real enquiries: a shielding specification that could not be terminated consistently by hand, replaced with a construction that can; a ±0.1 mm tolerance on a dimension with no functional requirement, relaxed and removed from the cost; and an overmold geometry that trapped air at the insert, caught before the cavity was machined rather than after T1.

None of these are exotic. They are the ordinary result of someone reading the drawing with the process in mind.
