Overview

A straight plug sticking 30 mm out of the side of a laptop decides where that laptop can sit. Put the machine against a wall or on a shallow shelf and all the strain goes into the port. A right angle USB-C cable takes the bend out of the first centimeter and lets the lead run along the chassis instead of away from it – which is the whole reason this format exists, and the reason the exit direction matters more than any headline number.

Exit direction: the one decision that decides whether it helps

A right-angle plug only solves the problem if it turns the right way. Get it wrong and the lead exits into the wall, the desk or the port next door. Note the port orientation on the device and tell us at enquiry stage; where the layout is unknown, we can supply the molding in both exit directions.

Why 80 cm

Short runs suit a dock or a drive sitting next to the machine. Competitor listings in this class quote 80 cm as the standard passive length at the top data rate, with a two meter option and a double right-angle variant. The reason is straightforward: passive high-rate assemblies lose margin with distance, and 80 cm is what fits a desk while staying inside that margin. Build notes

One end molded at 90 degrees, the other straight, so the lead exits along the chassis and still plugs into a normal socket at the far end.
Both ends at 90 degrees for handheld and console dock layouts where both sockets face the same way.
Strain relief molded over the plug body rather than clipped on, because a clip-on boot is the part that slides down the cable and then does nothing.
Weight held down where the lead hangs off a handheld rather than lying on a desk.
