13W3 to VGA HD15 Mixed-Contact D-Sub Cable

Overview

Mixed-contact D-Sub cable wired between a 13W3 male plug and an HD15 (VGA) male plug. The 13W3 shell carries 10 signal pins plus 3 coaxial contacts that originally routed the RGBHV video on Sun Microsystems, SGI and IBM workstation video outputs. The HD15 side carries the standard VGA pin-out, so the cable is a drop-in lead for moving the workstation video to a VGA monitor.

Construction and Materials

Three 75 ohm miniature coaxial lines (RGB) plus ten 28 AWG signal lines (sync, DDC, ground and the return paths) wrapped in an overall foil + braid shield with drain wire. The jacket is a PVC compound. Both connector ends are metal-hooded D-Sub shells with thumbscrews for mating to a chassis receptacle. The 13W3 side is a mixed-contact shell with 10 solder-cup signal pins and 3 crimp or solder coaxial contacts.

Compatibility and Fitment

Compatible with any 13W3 video output on a Sun, SGI or IBM workstation and any standard VGA input on a PC monitor. The coaxial lines are 75 ohm and should be terminated at the monitor input for best signal integrity. Not for digital TMDS signals – use an active converter for DVI or HDMI input.
