DC 4017 Right Angle Power Cable

This dc 4017 right angle cable has a 4.0 x 1.7 mm coaxial barrel plug molded in an L-shaped body, keeping the lead flush against the device chassis in tight spots.

Far end is built to your spec: bare tinned leads, DC plug or terminals.

Description

Overview

A dc 4017 right angle cable is a 4.0 x 1.7 mm coaxial barrel plug molded in an L-shaped body, with the far end built to your specification – bare tinned leads, another DC plug, or whatever the assembly calls for. The 4017 size is the smaller profile used on compact consumer devices, and the right-angle body is what lets the cable run flat along the chassis instead of standing out of the jack.

Four orientations, one right answer

A right-angle barrel can leave the cable in any of four directions around the jack axis. Getting it wrong is the single most common error on this part, because the plug still fits and the cable still works – it just exits into whatever was in the way. State the direction on the drawing, and send a photo of the device with the jack in view.

Naming the size correctly

Like every coaxial power connector, 4017 means 4.0 mm outside diameter and 1.7 mm center contact. It sits between the 5.5 mm family and the 3.5 mm family, so it is the size most often guessed rather than measured.

CalloutOD x ID (mm)Equipment you find it onCross-fits 4017?
55215.5 x 2.1CCTV, routers, LED driversNo
55255.5 x 2.5Laptop suppliesNo

Confirm the size on the device before ordering. The rating label usually prints it, and where it does not, a caliper across the jack center pin settles it in seconds.

What goes on the other end

Connector B is open by design, because this part is usually the front half of a larger assembly. The common choices:

  • Stripped and tinned leads – for a terminal block, a screw connector or a PCB.
  • A second DC plug or socket – where you are extending or adapting.
  • Ring or spade terminals – for a chassis-mounted supply.
  • Bare copper with a ferrule – for a spring-cage connector.

Whichever you choose, say what the strip length and tin length have to be. Those two dimensions are the ones that decide whether the lead seats fully in a spring-cage terminal or bottoms out on insulation.

Where the strain goes

A right-angle body solves a clearance problem by moving the bend into the mold, which means the mold now carries a load the cable used to. Two things extend its life: a strain relief boot long enough to spread the bend over several millimeters, and a cable route that does not immediately reverse direction. Where the lead has to double back, tell us and we will lengthen the boot or add a molded support.

Typical applications for this dc 4017 right angle cable

  • Compact laptops and netbooks with a flush barrel jack
  • Portable DVD and media players in a tight cabinet slot
  • Small electronics where the jack sits against a surface
  • Enclosure builds where the cable has to exit along the panel
  • Replacement leads where the original straight plug cracked the jack

How to specify your build

  1. Exit direction of the right-angle body.
  2. Connector B – bare leads, DC plug, or terminals.
  3. Strip and tin length, if the far end is bare.
  4. Length measured along the route.
  5. Polarity – center positive unless stated otherwise.
  6. Load current, so the gage is sized to it.
  7. Quantity.

Workmanship and testing

Build standard for DC 4017 Right Angle builds is IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 under ISO 9001, with terminations from 32 to 12 AWG. 100% continuity and pinout are tested on each DC unit before it is packed, and seal checking is quoted whenever an ingress rating is on the drawing.

Material declarations against RoHS and REACH are issued per project, alongside the dimensional and electrical reports agreed at quotation; see certifications, compliance and material declarations. Where your drawing names a UL style or another approval, the build follows your drawing and ships with the supporting document rather than a claim of our own. Right-angle exits are molded rather than bent, following the exit forms and tooling described under right-angle exit tooling options. Related reading: what outdoor duty does to a jacket. Tooling for this build is cut in our own tool room and belongs to your program, so a repeat run years later starts from the same tool.

Custom builds and ordering

On DC 4017 Right Angle builds, prototype lots run from 1 to 50 pcs and leave in 3 working days. Production runs of 500 pcs and up ship 14 working days after approval. Tooling not already held adds around 10 working days. DC OEM and ODM shipments carry your part number and labeling, and material certificates and first-article reports come with them on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which way does the cable exit?

Any of four directions – you specify it on the drawing. A photo of the installation is the fastest way to get it right.

Is 4017 the same as 4.0 x 1.7 mm?

Yes. The callout is the outside diameter followed by the center contact diameter, both in millimeters.

Can the far end be bare wire?

Yes. Bare and tinned leads are the default open end; give us the strip length, tin length and which conductor is positive.

Do you stock a straight version?

Yes, and a straight-to-right-angle combo. All three are molded in house, so switching between them changes the body, not the supplier.
