DC Barrel Adapter Kit – 5521 / 5525 / 4017 / 3513 / 1.35mm / 2.5mm, 6-Piece
A dc barrel adapter kit covering 5.5×2.1, 5.5×2.5, 4.0×1.7, 3.5×1.35 and 2.5 mm in six molded female-to-male adapters, so one supply covers a mixed estate. Center positive throughout, with nickel-plated brass contacts. Measure the socket pin with a caliper before ordering: the outer shell is identical across three of these five sizes. Bagged with a size card, or boxed with a printed insert.
Overview
A dc barrel adapter kit exists because the barrel sizes on small DC equipment were never standardized. Two devices that look identical from the outside can differ by four tenths of a millimeter on the inner pin, and a supply shipped with the wrong plug is a return rather than a sale. This kit covers the five sizes that cause almost all of those mismatches in six molded female-to-male adapters, so one supply type covers a mixed estate.

Barrel size selection table
Pick by the inner diameter of the socket pin, not by the look of the plug. The outer shell is the same 5.5 mm across three of these sizes, which is exactly why they get confused.
| Size | Outer x inner | Commonly seen on | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5521 | 5.5 x 2.1 mm | Routers, ONTs, CCTV cameras, LED drivers, 12 V equipment | The most common size in the field; the default |
| 5525 | 5.5 x 2.5 mm | Some monitors, audio gear and mini DC UPS units | A 2.1 mm plug enters a 2.5 mm socket and feels loose |
| 4017 | 4.0 x 1.7 mm | Portable routers, small network gear, mini PCs, USB hubs | Smaller shell; will not enter a 5.5 mm socket |
| 35135 | 3.5 x 1.35 mm | Compact routers, mini cameras, small audio devices | Often confused with 4017 at a glance |
| 2.5 mm | 2.5 mm mono (TS) | LED strip connectors, effect pedals, some toys and instruments | A mono plug, not a coaxial power barrel |
These associations are what is commonly seen in the field and are a starting point, not a guarantee. The size your kit is built to is the one you name on the order.
How to measure your socket
A caliper settles in seconds what a photo cannot. Two measurements are enough:
- Inner diameter of the pin in the socket – measure the pin, not the shell. This is the number that decides the adapter.
- Outer diameter of the socket barrel, which tells you the shell size the plug has to enter.
Where the plug has to enter a recessed inlet, check the depth and the shell diameter as well – a barrel that is the right size but too short a body will not seat. If you send us the device part number and a photo of the inlet we will confirm the size before you commit.
Polarity: what these adapters do and do not do
Every adapter in the kit is center positive and the kit is labeled that way. These adapters change barrel size; they do not reverse polarity. If your device is center negative, this is the wrong part, and the right one is a dedicated build – our reverse polarity DC 5521 power cable covers that case.
The symbol on the device label is the authority: a circle with a dot in the middle, a plus arm to the center and a minus arm to the ring is center positive. There is no convention that holds across all DC connector sizes, so read the label rather than assuming.
What the adapters are made of
Each adapter is a molded body with nickel-plated brass contacts, not a machined shell with a loose insert. That distinction matters in service: an insert that can rotate will eventually rotate under the spring pressure of the socket, and the contact ends up off-axis. A molded body holds the contact where it was set. The matte finish takes a written label, which is how most field kits end up marking adapters per device.
Rating, and where the limit comes from
The figure quoted for comparable adapters is 24 V DC at 5 A, and the limiting factor is contact area at the pin rather than the size of the wire feeding it. Stacking adapters is worth avoiding: each additional interface adds contact resistance and another mechanical joint that can work loose. Where you need a different rating, say so – the contact and the molding change together, so it is a tooling question rather than a binning question, and the value your adapters are built and verified to is stated per your specification.
Typical applications for this dc barrel adapter kit
- Installers carrying one supply type across a mixed estate of routers, ONTs and cameras
- Service vans stocking the sizes that fail most often
- OEMs bundling an adapter set with a device that has an unusual barrel
- Bench and lab drawers, replacing the box of loose adapters
- Kits built alongside a USB A to 3513 barrel power cable or a USB A to 2.5 mm barrel power cable
How to specify your kit
- Sizes – the standard six, or your own list.
- Quantity per size – kits do not have to be one of each.
- Polarity – center positive as standard; center negative is a different build.
- Rating you need, stated per your specification.
- Packaging – bagged with a size card, or boxed with a printed insert.
- Labeling – your part number, barcode, or a printed size card.
- Body color, if the kit has to match a product family.
Workmanship and testing
For DC Barrel Adapter Kit builds the line runs to IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 under ISO 9001, terminating 32 to 12 AWG. continuity and pinout are tested on each DC unit before it is packed, and seal checking is quoted whenever an ingress rating is on the drawing.
Every production run can ship with RoHS and REACH declarations and the electrical report agreed at quotation; see certifications and material declarations. UL styles and other named approvals are built to drawing: we source to the style you specify and document it, rather than asserting a listing we do not hold. Where this build needs an overmold, the tool is designed, cut and maintained in our own shop under the overmold tooling we build in-house, and it is never used for another customer’s program. Custom builds and ordering
DC Barrel Adapter Kit prototype lots start from 1 to 50 pcs and ship in 3 working days; production requires 500 pcs and runs 14 working days after sample approval. Your part number and labeling go on OEM and ODM DC shipments, and material certificates plus first-article reports are available. We hold 100 sets of mold tooling in house, so a standard body needs no tooling time and a new one adds about 10 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a 2.1 mm plug work in a 2.5 mm socket?
It will enter and it will often make contact, but it is loose. The result is an intermittent drop that is much harder to diagnose than a clean failure.
Do these reverse polarity?
No. They change barrel size only. A center-negative device needs a purpose-built cable.
How do I know which size my device takes?
Measure the socket pin with a caliper. If you cannot get at it, send the device part number and a photo of the inlet and we will confirm.
Can I substitute a size in the kit?
Yes. The six-piece set is the standard configuration, and we substitute sizes or change the mix for production orders.
Can I stack two adapters?
You can, but each extra interface adds contact resistance and a mechanical joint. Where a permanent fix is needed, a cable built to the right size is better.
