Overview

A 6 pin DIN audio cable with a 3.5 mm plug on the other end is an adapter lead for getting a modern source into equipment that predates the mini jack. It is passive: there is no electronics inside, no level conversion and no protocol conversion. That is exactly what makes it useful in a fixed installation, and it is also the reason the pinout has to be right before it is plugged in.

A 3.5 mm phone connector can be two, three or four conductor, and the DIN end can carry anything the manufacturer chose. Both ends have to be specified before the cable is built.

Identifying both ends before you order

  1. Count the conductors on the 3.5 mm plug. Two black rings means stereo; one means mono; three means it also carries a microphone or video signal.
  2. Count the pins on the DIN plug and measure the body. Six pins at about 13.2 mm is standard six-pin DIN; about 9.5 mm is a mini-DIN and will not fit.
  3. Check the direction of the signal. Which end is the source and which is the input.
  4. Read the panel legend on the equipment. Line in, mic in, aux in and phono are all different levels and impedances.
  5. Send us the pinout or a photo of both sockets and we will confirm what we can build.

Why these adapter leads fail

  • Strain at the 3.5 mm end. A plug in a portable device gets pulled sideways constantly, and that is where the conductors break.
  • Adapters stacked on adapters. Each extra join is another intermittent contact, and this is where most hum and crackle actually comes from.
  • Wrong pinout. On a shell with no agreed standard this is common, and the symptom is silence on one channel rather than a dead cable.
  • Unshielded cable next to mains wiring producing hum that people blame on the equipment.
  • DIN pins bent by a plug forced in without aligning the keyway.

Fitting and verifying the lead

  1. Plug the DIN end in first, with the equipment powered down if it is a powered input.
  2. Align the keyway and seat the plug fully. Do not rock it in.
  3. Start the source at low level and bring it up. A line output into a microphone input will overload immediately.
  4. Check both channels separately. Mono on one side is a wiring question, not a fault.
  5. Listen for hum with the equipment grounded as it will normally be used before you fix the run in place.

  6. Shielded, which is the default for audio.
  7. Quantity, and whether this is a prototype or a production order.

Conductor range is 32 to 12 AWG. Because there is no default pinout on this shell, every build is verified against the pinout you supply rather than against a chart. Any dimension quoted for the connectors is the industry-standard value; your assembly is built and verified to your drawing.

Will this convert the signal for me?

No. It is a passive adapter. It connects a 3.5 mm source to a 6-pin DIN input and changes nothing about the level or the format.

Which pinout does it use?

Yours. There is no agreed standard for this shell, so we build to the pinout you send or to the equipment model you name.

Can I use it with a microphone input?

Only if the levels and the pinout suit. Check the panel legend first: a line output into a microphone input will overload it.

Why do I only get sound on one channel?

That is a wiring mismatch between the two ends, not a fault. Send us the pinout and we will build it to match.
