Overview

Why 1.5 m, and when it is the wrong length

A fixed install fails in one of two ways: the cable is too short and somebody adds a gender changer
plus a second cable, or it is far too long and the excess gets coiled inside a ceiling void next to
mains. Both are worse than ordering the right length. Use this table to decide before you buy.

One more thing is worth knowing before you choose a length: analog video degrades gradually rather
than suddenly, so a run that is slightly too long is still watchable, just soft, and the fault gets

Reading the jacket marking before you pull it

The jacket on this build carries a printed AWM 2464 style marking with a temperature and voltage
rating, which is the marking you want on anything that goes into a plenum-adjacent void, an office
partition or a ceiling. Two practical points. First, printed markings are the only way an inspector or
a maintenance contractor can identify a cable two years later, so do not accept a plain jacket for
fixed work just to save a small amount. Second, the marking on a custom run is whatever your
specification calls for, so state it on the drawing rather than assuming the stock legend carries
over.

Install practice that saves a call-out

Analog video rewards tidy work. Label both ends with the source and the destination before the
ceiling tile goes back, because a cream cable in a cream ceiling cannot be traced afterwards. Leave a
service loop at the display end rather than at the source, so a future swap can be made without
re-pulling the run. Keep the cable away from mains and from lighting dimmers, and never staple through
it: a flat spot pressed into a coaxial core is a permanent reflection point. Where the run passes sharp
sheet metal, fit a grommet, since the jacket is the only thing between the core and that edge.

Test before you close up, too. A picture that looks acceptable on a wall of large text may be
losing exactly the fine detail a spreadsheet grid needs, and that is the moment to find out rather
than after the contractor has left the site.

Light jacket, and the trade you are making

Off-white PVC hides against cream walls, ceiling tiles and beige PC cases, and it makes a run
visible enough to be traced during service, which installers generally like. The trade is that light
PVC shows scuff marks and handling dirt more than black does, so it is a poor choice for a cable that
gets coiled and thrown in a case every day. For portable and rental stock, order the same build in
black; for anything fixed, the light jacket is the right call. Jacket color is a build option on every

Measure the run, then order

1. Measure the route, not the straight-line distance: around the desk leg, up the
   wall, along the tray.
2. Add service slack at both ends, roughly 150 mm per end, and no more.
3. Decide the color — cream for fixed and visible, black for portable.
4. Confirm the pinout if the display depends on reading EDID over the DDC pair.
5. State the jacket marking you need printed, if the install is inspected.
