Overview

Console ports on managed switches, routers, firewalls and UPS units are wired as data terminal equipment, and the screw lock console cable that reaches them reverses all eight conductors end to end: pin 1 to pin 8, pin 2 to pin 7, and so on. That reversal is what lets two DTE-wired devices talk to each other without a separate null-modem block, and it is also the reason a straight patch cord gives you nothing but a blank screen.

DB9 to RJ45 pinout reference

This is the mapping used by the majority of managed switches, and it is the arrangement we build unless you tell us otherwise. It is a de facto convention, not a law: terminal servers, console concentrators and some UPS units move pins around.

Hold the two plugs side by side with the latch facing away from you: the color on the outermost pin of one end will be the color on the outermost pin of the other. That is the fastest way to tell a rolled cable from a straight patch cord in a bag of spares.

The rollover and the DB9 mapping above are conventions that grew up around one vendor family and were copied widely. They are given here as fitment guidance; nothing here is supplied or endorsed by any equipment manufacturer, and the buyer should confirm the pinout against the device documentation before release.

Why the DB9 end is screwed down

A console lead is not a lead you unplug. It is patched in once, dressed into the cable management, and then left there for years so that the next engineer with a laptop can reach the box when the network is down. A plain DB9 held only by contact friction will creep out of a vertical or upside-down port over time, and the failure is silent: nothing reports that a console link has been lost, so you find out at three in the morning when you need it. The two jackscrews clamp the connector to the equipment and take the weight of the cable off the contacts entirely.

Why the original lead fails

  • The flat cable is dressed too tightly and the conductors work-harden where it enters the plug.
  • The RJ45 latch snaps, and the plug then sits loose in a port nobody looks at for years.
  • Jackscrews are left finger-tight and the shell works loose under its own weight in a vertical port.
  • The lead is borrowed for another job and never comes back, which is why racks should carry a spare.

Confirming the port before you order

  1. Confirm the device side pinout, especially on terminal servers and console concentrators.
  2. Check whether the port expects hardware flow control, or is happy with none.
  3. Set the terminal to the usual 9600 8N1 default first; some boxes differ.
  4. Note the physical space around the port, which decides straight or right-angle.

Build notes

The assembly is a flat or round eight-conductor cable with a molded RJ45 plug on the equipment end and an overmolded DB9 female shell on the laptop end. Flat construction is worth having in a rack because it dresses neatly and stays flat against the panel. Straight or right-angle exits are both available, and the right-angle version keeps the cable clear of neighboring ports on a fully populated console patch panel. Contact plating is gold flash over nickel, and the jacket is black or gray PVC.

Length is made to order, which is worth using properly: a console lead that is too short will not reach a laptop set on the rack shelf, and one that is too long ends up coiled in the cable management. Five pieces is where a prototype starts and it ships in 3 working days. Production requires 500 pcs minimum and takes 14 working days after approval. Non-stock tooling adds around 10 working days. Every build is assembled and inspected to IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 workmanship under our ISO 9001 system. We terminate conductors from 32 to 12 AWG. Each unit is checked for continuity and pinout before packing, and where the build carries an ingress rating we can add seal checking on the production run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as a straight Ethernet patch cord?

No. The conductors are rolled end to end, so a patch cord in a console port gives you a blank screen rather than a connection.

Will it work on every switch?

It matches the mapping used by most managed switches. Terminal servers and some UPS units differ, so check the device documentation before ordering.

What terminal settings should I use?

9600 8N1 with no flow control is the common default and the right place to start. Some boxes differ.

Flat or round?
