Buried Runs Without Conduit

A standard patch cord dropped into a trench fails slowly and expensively: water wicks along the pairs, the aluminium foil corrodes, and the link degrades over one or two wet seasons. This Cat6A outdoor direct-burial patch cord is built for the trench. The core is filled with a water-blocking compound so that a nick in the jacket does not turn into a capillary, and the jacket is a UV-stabilised polyethylene intended to sit in soil and sunlight without embrittling.

Water Blocking

Gel filling is the mechanism that makes burial viable without conduit, and it is also the reason the cable is unpleasant to terminate by hand. Factory-terminated assemblies avoid that entirely and are the practical option for buried links. Where a run has to be joined in the field, use a gel-filled closure rated for the environment rather than a standard coupler, or the blocking is undone at the first joint.

• 23 AWG solid bare copper, four pairs, for low DC resistance on long powered runs

Installation Notes

• Bury below the local frost and traffic depth; check local rules for warning tape and marker requirements.
• Leave a service loop at each end inside a handhole rather than pulling the cable tight.
• Support the vertical section at the riser so the weight of the soil does not load the connector seal.
• Bond the screen at the building end; a buried shielded cable with a floating screen is an antenna.

Typical Uses

Inter-building links between outbuildings and a main LAN, perimeter security cameras, gate and door access controllers, small-cell and radio backhaul drops, and the service entrance for EV charging points. The cable serves powered devices as well as data, so a single trench carries both.
