Why Breakaway Matters More Than Convenience

A magnetic connector is often sold on convenience, and that is the smaller half of the argument. The real reason to specify one on a patient-worn or handheld device is what happens when the cable is pulled. A friction-fit plug transmits the whole yank to the socket and then to the PCB behind it; a magnetic pogo pin cable releases at the interface first, so the device stays where it is and the port is not levered off the board. For a monitor worn on a body, a handheld terminal in a clinical cart, an exoskeleton joint or a robot that moves while tethered, that release is the difference between a reconnect and a repair.

How the Interface Works

The device side carries a ring of spring-loaded pins in a housing with a locating feature, so the cable head can only seat one way up. Gold plating on the pins is there for the contact surface: pogo pins make contact through a small, constantly moving point, and a plating that tarnishes will raise contact resistance over the life of the product. Pin counts of two, four and eight are available, chosen by what the device needs to carry, from plain charging to charging plus signal lines.

Electrical Protection and Options

Reverse polarity protection is included, because a magnetic interface that can be approached at an angle can also be approached wrongly.
