USB A to 3-5mm DC Female Cable
This usb a 3 5mm dc cable puts a USB Type-A male plug on one end and a DC 3.5 mm coaxial female socket on the other, tapping 5 V from any USB host for small barrel-jack gear.
Center positive standard; not for 5521, 5525 or 4017 equipment.
Overview
A usb a 3 5mm dc cable takes 5 V from a USB-A host and presents it on a DC 3.5 mm coaxial female socket. Note the socket: this assembly is the counterpart to a device or a lead that already has a 3.5 mm male plug. It is used where equipment was shipped with a 3.5 mm barrel supply and the installer wants to run it from USB – a power bank, a vehicle USB port, or a hub that is already in place.

Socket or plug – which half do you need?
Half the wrong orders on small-barrel adapters come from not reading which gender is on which end. This one ends in a female socket, which means it accepts a plug. If your device has a socket and you want to feed it, you need a cable ending in a male plug, not this one.
| What the device has | What the cable must end in | This assembly |
|---|---|---|
| A 3.5 mm male plug on its supply lead | A 3.5 mm female socket | Yes – correct pair |
| A 3.5 mm female jack on the device | A 3.5 mm male plug | No – use the male version |
| A 5.5 x 2.1 mm jack | A 5.5 x 2.1 mm plug | No – different barrel |
| A 3.5 mm audio jack | Not a power part at all | No – do not connect |
The last row is worth repeating. A 3.5 mm audio socket and a 3.5 mm coaxial power jack are dimensionally similar enough to be confused by eye, and feeding 5 V into an audio input destroys it. If the device documentation says “audio”, “line in” or “headphone”, stop and re-read the label.
The small-barrel size map
3.5 mm is an outside diameter, and the family hides several different center contacts under it. Confirm the inner dimension before you commit to a production quantity.
| Callout | OD x ID (mm) | Where it appears | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.5 x 1.35 | 3.5 x 1.35 | Very common small barrel, often cross-listed as 3.5 x 1.3 | Measure the jack center pin |
| 3.5 x 1.3 | 3.5 x 1.3 | Mini routers, label printers, hobby gear | The 3513 callout |
| 3.5 x 1.1 | 3.5 x 1.1 | Some compact consumer devices | Less common; confirm |
| 2.5 mm | 2.5 x (per device) | Legacy handheld and hobby gear | Different family |
| 4017 | 4.0 x 1.7 | Mini laptops, portable DVD | Larger shell |
If you are supplying into several unknown devices, the adapter set is the cheaper first purchase: it tells you which size you actually need before you commit to a run.
What the USB-A host will actually deliver
The USB port sets the ceiling, not the cable. A standard USB 2.0 port is defined for 500 mA and a USB 3.x port for 900 mA; a port built to the Battery Charging specification can advertise up to 1.5 A. Those are the values defined by the specifications for the port, and the current your assembly is verified to is the one stated on your drawing.
- Add up every load on the port before you plug in, including startup surges.
- A multi-port charger with a shared budget does not give each port its marked figure.
- At 5 V a modest drop is a large percentage – measure at the device.
- If the device browns out, thicker and shorter beats a bigger charger.
Typical applications for this usb a 3 5mm dc cable
- Running legacy 3.5 mm barrel gear from a power bank or USB hub
- Hobby and bench builds documented with a 3.5 mm coaxial power jack
- Small routers and modem DC inputs in the field
- Trade-show and demo kits where mains outlets are scarce
- Service kits that need one cable to cover several small devices
How to specify your build
- Barrel size – outside and inside diameter, measured.
- Gender – socket or plug on the device end.
- Polarity – center positive unless stated otherwise.
- Load current, steady and peak.
- Length and conductor gage.
- Jacket color and any print.
- Quantity.
Workmanship and testing
USB A builds are assembled and inspected to IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 criteria, with ISO 9001 as the quality system over 32 to 12 AWG work. continuity and pinout are verified on each USB assembly before packing, and seal checking is quoted whenever an ingress rating is on the drawing.
RoHS and REACH declarations are provided per project together with the agreed test reports; the documentation scope is listed under certifications and compliance. If your drawing specifies a UL style, we build to that drawing and supply the UL reference with the shipment instead of substituting an equivalent. Injection parameters for this part are developed against the jacket material using the approach documented under overmolding and injection molding. Custom builds and ordering
USB A prototype builds start from 1 to 50 pcs and are out in 3 working days. Production is quoted from 500 pcs at 14 working days after sample approval. Your part number and labeling go on OEM and ODM USB shipments, and we provide material certificates and first-article reports when asked. We hold 100 sets of mold tooling in house, so a standard body needs no tooling time and a new one adds about 10 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 3.5 mm end a plug or a socket?
A socket. It accepts a 3.5 mm male plug. If your device has a jack and needs feeding, you want the version that ends in a male plug.
Will it work with 3.5 x 1.35 mm gear?
Often yes, but confirm. The two callouts are frequently cross-listed and the difference is small enough to matter. Measure the center pin or try the adapter set first.
Can I use it for audio?
No. A 3.5 mm power jack and a 3.5 mm audio jack are not interchangeable, and connecting power to an audio input will damage the device.
How much current can it carry?
Whatever the host port advertises and the conductor is sized for. Tell us the load and the run length and we will size the gage; the verified figure is stated on your drawing.
