Active Optical HDMI Cable for Boardrooms and Ceiling Projectors
An active optical HDMI cable exists to solve a distance problem. Once a run goes past the length where a passive copper lead behaves predictably, the usual symptoms start appearing: the picture drops out when the projector warms up, the link negotiates down to a lower format, or the source refuses to see the display at all. In a boardroom with the projector on the ceiling and the source in a floor box or a rack at the back of the room, that is exactly the situation. This assembly puts the high speed signal path onto optical fibre and keeps copper only for power and control, which is how a long lead stays thin enough to pull through conduit.
Why fibre instead of copper
Copper assemblies long enough to carry a high bandwidth video signal have to use thick conductors and heavy shielding, and the result is a stiff cable with a wide bend radius that fights you inside a ceiling void or a lectern. Moving the signal to fibre removes most of that bulk, so the finished lead is lighter, easier to route and far less likely to kink at the connector during installation. It also removes a common failure mode in permanent installs, where a heavy cable hangs off the projector bracket and slowly works the plug loose.
Installation notes
- Source and display ends are marked, and the cable is directional: it will not work if pulled in the wrong way round
- Pull the assembly into place before terminating; do not use the connectors to drag it through conduit
- Leave a service loop at the projector end so the plug can be re-seated without re-pulling the run
- Keep the lead away from mains and lighting cable where the two must run parallel
Handling and bend radius
Fibre cores tolerate pulling and routing well but not tight folding. The assembly uses aramid yarn as the strength member, so the pull force is taken by the yarn rather than the optical fibres, but a hard kink at the connector boot will still damage it. Coil the cable in large loops for transport, avoid stapling through the jacket, and keep bends gentle where the lead turns into a wall plate or a projector mount. Where the run passes through a plenum space, ask us about a jacket rated for that use before ordering, since the standard jacket is not intended for it.
Lengths and ordering
Stock builds cover the lengths most often specified for meeting rooms and small halls, and custom lengths are available for volume orders. Tell us the exact distance and the route the cable has to take; we would rather quote a slightly longer assembly with a service loop than one that has to be stretched to reach.
