Toslink Digital Optical Audio Cable

Overview

Toslink digital optical audio cable carrying an S/PDIF digital audio stream between source and receiver. Toslink is immune to ground-loop hum and to most forms of electromagnetic interference because the signal travels as pulses of light along a plastic optical fibre.

Construction and Materials

Moulded square Toslink male plugs on both ends, each with a clear protective cap over the optical tip and a strain-relief boot at the cable exit. Inside the black PVC jacket is a single plastic optical fibre (POF) that carries the digital audio as pulses of red light at around 650 nm.

Typical Applications

TV, Blu-ray, game console, set-top box or media player to a soundbar, AV receiver, or DAC. Carries uncompressed 2-channel PCM and compressed multi-channel formats like Dolby Digital and DTS. Common where a coaxial digital output is not available on the source.

Compatibility and Fitment

Standard full-size Toslink (JIS F05) square socket. Not a Mini-Toslink (3.5 mm optical) — the connector bodies are different sizes. Practical cable length is up to about 5 m for reliable transmission on plastic fibre; longer runs need glass fibre and should be specified on order.
