Overview

A DT06 to J1939 adapter lets a workshop scan tool with a 9-pin or OBD-II
connector talk to machines that only expose a 6-pin diagnostic receptacle. The 6-pin side follows
the Deutsch DT series footprint that agricultural and construction equipment has used for
decades; the tool side is built as a round 9-pin connector, a J1962 16-pin socket, or both on a
short branch. One adapter replaces the loose collection of brand-specific jumpers most service
vans accumulate, and it does it without touching the machine harness.

The DT family: three sizes, one idea

The DT series is a family of rectangular, environmentally sealed thermoplastic connectors
built around a common latch and a wedge lock that confirms contact alignment and retention. The
three sizes in the family differ by contact size, which is what sets the current each cavity can
carry. Knowing which one you have stops you ordering the wrong shell.

The DT06-6S is a 6-position plug from the DT series: size 16 sockets, 4.44 mm centerline,
integrated latch, and a W6S wedge lock that has to be fitted before the contacts are loaded.
Mated with a DT04-6P flange receptacle and assembled correctly, the family is rated IP68. Those
are the published values for the connector family; the values your assembly is built and verified
to are the ones on your drawing.

Keying: the reason two gray plugs will not mate

DT housings are keyed so that a plug will only enter the receptacle it was made for. On a
machine with three DT connectors within a hand’s width, that is the difference between a two
minute job and a towed machine. The keying is mechanical and visible on the shell, which is also
why a photo of the receptacle is the single most useful thing you can send us.

What the adapter does and does not convert

It carries the CAN and power lines and presents them on the connector your tool expects. It
does not convert protocols. Your tool still has to speak the protocol the machine uses, and a
service tool that expects a 9-pin connection will not automatically read a machine that only
offers J1708. On implements working alongside ISO 11783, the 6-pin port is often the only
diagnostic access point, so shops either buy a brand-specific cable or use an adapter like this
one.

Construction

Installation and handling

Confirm the pinout of the machine receptacle before the first connection, because the 6-pin
shell is used for several non-interchangeable definitions. Plug in with the machine at rest and
the ignition in the position your tool manual specifies. Route the cable away from exhaust
manifolds, turbo housings, hydraulic lines and any pivoting linkage, and keep it clear of the cab
door pinch area. During service the adapter can hang from the port, but do not leave it
permanently installed in an outdoor socket where the seal is not designed to keep weather out;
use a blanking cap on the machine port when the adapter is removed.

Is this a genuine Deutsch part?

No. It is a compatible component built to the published DT series footprint. The interface
belongs to its owner; we build to the dimensions and the pinout you send.

How do I identify the keying on my receptacle?

Send a photo of the connector face. The keyway position identifies the key, and cavity count
reads off the same photo.

Will it work on a 24 V machine?

Yes, the build covers 12 V and 24 V nominal systems. State the voltage when you order so the
conductors and the pin assignment match.

Can I have both a 9-pin and a 16-pin outlet on one adapter?

Yes. Both are offered on a short branch so one adapter covers two tool types.

Does it convert between protocols?
