Overview
An M12 S-coded power cable covers single-phase AC in a connector family that was largely built around three-phase. Where a five-position three-phase shell is the wrong tool – cabinet heaters, small pumps and fans, field I/O blocks that take mains in and distribute protected low voltage out, and retrofit panels originally wired with 7/8 inch connectors – three phase positions plus protective earth is enough for line, neutral and earth, and it keeps the connector smaller and less expensive than a K-coded shell.

Why this coding exists
The M12 power codings were introduced as a group because one shell now had to serve several different mains jobs without any of them being cross-mateable. S-code occupies the single-phase slot in that group. It is keyed so it cannot be mated with an A-coded signal receptacle, with a K-coded three-phase outlet, or with the older C-coded AC parts – the contact layout and the key slot make cross-mating physically impossible rather than merely discouraged. That is the entire point of the scheme set out in IEC 61076-2-111.
The practical consequence for a panel carrying both 24 V and mains is simple: do not standardize on one coding across every outlet. Keep the signal outlets A-coded and the mains outlets S-coded, and the most expensive commissioning mistake on the machine becomes impossible to make.
S-code contact reference
The four positions below are the arrangement for a 3 + PE S-coded shell. On a single-phase feed two of the three phase positions carry line and neutral and the third is either unused or used for a second circuit, exactly as the device drawing specifies. The earth position is the extended first-make contact and is the one worth checking twice.

A, B, C and D are defined in IEC 61076-2-101, X in IEC 61076-2-109 and the power codings K, L, M, S and T in IEC 61076-2-111 – confirm which edition your specification is written against. Y is a de-facto hybrid arrangement rather than an IEC-defined code. The 630 V and 12 A figures quoted above are the industry-standard class values for this coding; the values your assembly is built and verified to are the ones stated on your drawing.
Telling S, K and C apart
On a service call these three are the ones that get confused, because all three can appear on mains circuits on the same machine.

Replacing 7/8 inch power connectors
A large installed base of machinery uses 7/8 inch connectors for single-phase distribution. They are bulky, the contacts are costly, and the range of pre-molded cordsets is narrow. Moving to M12 shortens the panel cut-out, allows more feeds across the same enclosure face, and brings the power connection into the same family already used for sensors and fieldbus on that machine. Ratings to confirm before you specify
Confirm the conductor cross-section against the actual load current and run length, since voltage drop is usually the binding constraint on a long single-phase feed. Screened versions need the screen termination checked at both ends, because a screen clamped at one end only changes the behavior of the installation. Frequently Asked Questions
Is S-code the same as K-code?
No. S-code is 3 + PE for single-phase AC; K-code is 4 + PE for three-phase at higher current. They are keyed so they cannot be mated with each other.
Can I use S-code for three-phase?
Not with three phase positions plus earth. For three-phase loads specify K-code.
Will an S-coded plug fit an A-coded receptacle?
No. The keyways differ deliberately so a signal lead cannot be pushed into a mains outlet.
What conductor size do I need?
