Overview

A dt connector pigtail harness is the short sealed lead that turns a light bar, rock light or work lamp with flying leads into something you can unplug. One end is a DT-series receptacle, the other is stripped and tinned copper. The point is service: a damaged lamp can be swapped at the roadside instead of re-spliced at the side of a track. It is the wedge-lock connector family used across off-road, marine, agricultural and construction lighting, and it is chosen as much for the seal as for the contact.

Keying: the reason two black plugs will not swap

DT connectors are offered with several mechanical keyway options, identified by the color of the wedge lock on the mating plug. The keyway does one job and does it well: it stops a 2-pin plug from a left-hand lamp going into the 3-pin receptacle of a rear work light, and it stops two identical circuits being swapped during a roadside repair in the dark. If your build has more than one DT connector in the same area, specify the keying per position and we will match the wedge locks.

Pick the pin count to match the mating plug on the lamp, not the number of wires the lamp has. Counting wires instead of positions is the most common reason a pigtail arrives and will not mate.

Sealing, and where water actually gets in

The connector body carries an interface seal and a rear wire seal, and the pigtail is overmolded, so there is no heat-shrink boot to split and let water track up the strands. That last point is the usual failure mode on this type of part: the connector itself is fine, the water gets in behind the boot and the copper goes green a hand-width up the cable. Two things still help — point the cable entry downward where the installation allows it, and support the lead so it is not hanging in a loop that holds water.

IP68 is the figure published for the mated connector family under the IP code system. It applies to a mated pair, and your assembly is verified to the value stated on your drawing rather than to a rating printed on a bag.

Wire and temperature

Leads are stranded tinned copper at 16 AWG, with 14 AWG available where the run is long or the lamp draw is high. Tinned rather than bare copper because these connections live in wet and salty environments and the tin buys years. The assembly is specified for continuous service across a wide temperature range, covering an engine bay and a northern winter.

IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 is the workmanship standard and ISO 9001 is the quality system behind it. We work from 32 to 12 AWG. Nothing ships without a continuity and pinout check, and seal checking can be added where an ingress rating is part of the specification.

Small runs start at 5 pcs and leave in 3 working days. At production volume the minimum is 500 pcs and lead time is 14 working days after approval. New tooling is about 10 working days on top. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which pin count to order?

Count the positions on the mating plug, not the wires on the lamp. Several 3- and 4-position lamps only populate two pins.

Is it the mating plug or the receptacle?

This part is the receptacle with leads. The mating plug version, for building the harness side, is available on the same lead.

Why tinned copper?

These connections live in wet, salty environments. Tinned strand resists the corrosion that turns bare copper green and raises resistance at the crimp.

Do you supply the original connector brand?

We build to the DT series interface using compatible components, and we are not supplied by the connector manufacturer.
