Cat5e UTP etherCON Patch Cord (Neutrik NE8MC Rugged Locking, Touring-Grade)
A cat5e utp ethercon patch cord with rugged locking RJ45 carriers on both ends, for touring, stage and studio runs where a standard latch does not survive.
Overview
A cat5e utp ethercon patch cord exists because the RJ45 latch is the weakest part of any touring network. The etherCON shell is a metal housing built around a standard RJ45 plug: it takes the strain off the latch, locks into a matching chassis socket, and survives being dragged across a stage. The plug inside is still an ordinary RJ45 — that is why it works in ordinary gear.

RJ45 versus etherCON: what actually changes
Nothing electrical changes. What changes is everything mechanical.
| Standard RJ45 | etherCON carrier | |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | Plastic plug body | Metal shell around the same RJ45 plug |
| Latch | Plastic tab, the usual break point | Latch protected inside the shell |
| Locking | Friction and a small tab | Positive latch into a matching chassis socket |
| Pull-out resistance | Low | High, load taken by the shell |
| Cable entry | Molded boot | Chuck-type strain relief gripping the jacket |
| Best for | Office LAN and patch panels | Touring, stage, rental stock, OB vans |
What plugs into what
This is the question that decides whether you need adapters on a job, so it is worth stating plainly. An etherCON cable plug will go into a standard RJ45 jack, because the RJ45 inside it is a normal plug. A standard RJ45 plug will go into an etherCON chassis socket, because the socket is built around an RJ45 jack. Neither direction needs an adapter, which is exactly why the system replaced the pile of gaffer-taped patch cords in the first place.
Where touring riders specify it
- Live sound: FOH to stage box, console to stage rack
- Lighting rigs running Art-Net, sACN or DMX512 over twisted pair
- Broadcast and OB trucks, where a drop is not an option
- Rental and dry-hire stock that has to survive hundreds of load-outs
- Houses of worship and installed AV that gets re-patched weekly
- Touring video walls and media servers
Cable and jacket for the road
Touring cable gets walked on, coiled badly, and pulled around corners, so the build decisions are physical: stranded conductor that survives repeated coiling, a jacket that stays flexible in a cold truck and does not go sticky in a hot one, and a strain relief that puts the bend where you want it rather than at the connector. Give us the temperature range and the handling it will see and we will quote the jacket; the figures for your build are stated per order.
Typical applications for this cat5e utp ethercon patch cord
- FOH console to stage box and stage rack runs
- Lighting network trunks between dimmers and fixtures
- Broadcast fly-packs and OB vans, alongside our Cat6A rugged locking patch cord
- Installed AV in venues with weekly re-patching
- Drum risers, keyboard rigs and amp racks with an Ethernet feed
- Any link where a standard RJ45 latch has broken before — DMX512 lighting cable for the lighting-side runs
How to specify your build
- Length — touring lengths are usually 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 m.
- Carrier style on each end — cable carrier, or chassis receptacle.
- Cable category — Cat5e class as standard, Cat6A where the run needs it.
- Jacket — PVC standard, PUR for outdoor and cold-weather work.
- Color — black is standard for stage; other colors for network identification.
- Labeling — heat-shrink or printed length markers save time on load-in.
Workmanship and testing
Assembly and inspection follow IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 workmanship criteria under our ISO 9001 quality management system, and every unit is 100% continuity and pinout tested before it is packed. Conductor range is 32 to 12 AWG. Shell retention and chuck grip are checked on the first article of every batch. Where a standard sets a limit for the category, the connector interface or the jacket, that is the industry-general definition of the rating. The values your assembly is built and verified to are the ones stated on your drawing, per order.
RoHS and REACH declarations are provided per project together with the agreed test reports; the documentation scope is listed under certifications and compliance. If your drawing specifies a UL style, we build to that drawing and supply the UL reference with the shipment instead of substituting an equivalent. This assembly is built on the four lines covered under the assembly lines behind this build, with nothing in the build handed to an undisclosed subcontractor. More background: cable assemblies for industrial automation and robotics. Any tooling we cut for this part stays yours, maintained in our own tool room under your part reference.
Custom builds and ordering
Cat5e UTP etherCON prototype builds start from 1 to 50 pcs and are out in 3 working days; production is quoted from 500 pcs at 14 working days after approval. Your part number and labeling go on OEM and ODM Cat5e shipments, and we provide material certificates and first-article reports when asked. New tooling adds about 10 working days, and we hold 100 sets of mold tooling in house.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will an etherCON plug fit a normal RJ45 port?
Yes. The RJ45 plug inside the shell is a standard plug, so it mates with ordinary jacks without an adapter.
Will a normal patch cord fit an etherCON socket?
Yes. The chassis socket is built around a standard RJ45 jack. You lose the latching, but it works.
Is this the same as a Neutrik etherCON?
This is the same shell style and the same latching concept, built by us. If your spec names a part number, send it and we will confirm the mating detail.
Can you build it with etherCON on one end and bare RJ45 on the other?
Yes. It is common for a run that starts at a locked stage box and ends inside a rack.
