Cat6A Rugged Locking Patch Cord, Metal Shell, for Stage and AVoIP
A Cat6A rugged locking patch cord built for load-out: shielded Category 6A core inside a metal latching shell that locks into the chassis connector and completes the screen path. Solid or stranded, 1 m to 75 m, compatible with etherCON-style chassis.
Overview
A Cat6A rugged locking patch cord is built for load-out rather than for a rack. Touring and broadcast work destroys ordinary patch leads: they are coiled and uncoiled every night, walked on, run across stage edges, and pulled out by the latch instead of the boot. This cord puts a shielded Category 6A core inside a metal latching shell that locks into the chassis connector instead of relying on the plastic RJ45 tab, which is the part that snaps off first on a normal lead.

What kills an ordinary lead on tour
The failure modes in live production are different from the ones in a data center, and they are worth naming because they drive the whole construction.
| Failure mode | What it looks like | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Latch broken off | Plug will not stay in the socket | Metal locking shell takes the retention load |
| Pulled by the cable | Intermittent pairs, then a dead lead | Molded strain relief plus a shell you can grip |
| Screen path broken | Dropouts near dimmers and wireless gear | Metal shell completes the screen at both ends |
| Cable memory and twisting | Lead will not lie flat on the next load-in | Flexible jacket compound and over-under coiling |
| Crushed underfoot | Permanent pair damage | Screened construction and a jacket chosen for abuse |
Why the metal shell matters at 10G
The shell is not only about retention. It completes the screen path, and at 10G that matters as much as the latching does: a lead whose shield is interrupted at the connector radiates and picks up noise, and in a venue with lighting dimmers and wireless systems nearby, that is what turns a solid Ethernet link into intermittent dropouts. A loose shell loses the screen path before it loses the link, which is why the shell screws belong on the routine maintenance list.
The plug shell follows the locking RJ45 housing format used across professional audio and video equipment and is compatible with etherCON-style chassis connectors, so it drops into the infrastructure most touring racks already carry.
Solid or stranded, and why the length decides it
Short leads that get coiled every night want stranded conductors; long fixed runs want solid. Both are available, and the choice is driven by what the lead has to do rather than by the connector. Pair foil plus an overall tinned-copper braid is standard across both.
Where the length limit comes from
10GBASE-T has a 100 m channel budget in structured cabling, and a stage box at the end of a long run also carries the permanent link behind it. Long touring leads therefore need to be treated as part of a channel calculation rather than as an isolated number. Where a single run approaches the limit, a fiber backbone with copper at the ends is usually the more robust design, and we will say so rather than sell a copper lead that will marginal-link on the night.
Handling
- Coil over-under to stop the cable developing a memory and twisting on the next pull.
- Pull by the shell, never by the cable.
- Inspect the latch and the shell screws during routine maintenance.
- Keep the shell capped or mated in storage; a bent shell will not seat.
Typical applications for this Cat6A rugged locking patch cord
- Live sound and touring racks
- Broadcast studios and OB trucks
- Dante, Art-Net and sACN lighting networks
- Auditoria and houses of worship
- 4K AVoIP distribution over Cat6A infrastructure
- Cost-sensitive touring runs using our Cat5e UTP etherCON touring patch cord
Ordering
Lengths run from 1 m to 75 m in stepped increments, in black. Tell us the longest run in the system and whether the leads get coiled daily, and we will confirm solid versus stranded and whether the run fits inside the channel budget.
Workmanship and testing
Workmanship on Cat6A Rugged Locking builds follows IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3, the line is run under ISO 9001, and the termination range is 32 to 12 AWG. No Cat6A assembly is boxed before 100% continuity and pinout are confirmed, and seal checking is quoted whenever an ingress rating is on the drawing.
Every production run can ship with RoHS and REACH declarations and the electrical report agreed at quotation; see certifications and material declarations. UL styles and other named approvals are built to drawing: we source to the style you specify and document it, rather than asserting a listing we do not hold. The strain relief and molded body are produced on tooling we cut ourselves see in-house mold making and overmold tooling so the tool is quoted separately, owned by you, and available for repeat runs years later. The wider context is covered under cable assemblies for industrial automation and robotics.
Custom builds and ordering
Quote Cat6A Rugged Locking builds from 1 to 50 pcs and they ship in 3 working days; at volume the minimum is 500 pcs with 14 working days after approval. Tooling not already held adds around 10 working days. Your part number and labeling go on Cat6A shipments, and material certificates and first-article reports are on offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this fit the etherCON connectors already on my racks?
The shell follows the locking RJ45 housing format used across professional audio and video equipment and is compatible with etherCON-style chassis connectors.
Solid or stranded – which should I buy?
Stranded for leads that get coiled every night, solid for long fixed runs. Tell us the longest run and how the leads are handled and we will confirm.
How long can a touring lead be?
It depends on the permanent link behind it as well as the lead. Send us the channel layout and we will check it against the 100 m budget rather than quote a standalone figure.
What is the mating cycle rating?
1000 cycles minimum, and that figure should be confirmed against the test report for the shell you are buying.
