Light-Duty Cat6A for Patch Runs

Where the run is short, the environment is benign, and the bundle is dense, an unshielded stranded Cat6A in a smaller outside diameter is the right tool. This is the standard 10G patch lead for switch-to-patch-panel work, Wi-Fi 7 access point cabinets, and edge enclosures where space is the constraint.

The Trade-Off, Stated Plainly

Thinner conductor means higher DC resistance, and higher resistance means more voltage drop and more heat when you push Power over Ethernet. Short runs at 10GBASE-T are fine; long runs carrying PoE+ at the high-power end are not. UTP Cat6A is the right choice for top-of-rack patching and short equipment runs, and the wrong choice for a 90 m horizontal link feeding a high-power device. Where noise is the issue, use the shielded Cat6A S/FTP patch cord instead.

Specifications

28 AWG stranded UTP – 500 MHz, RJ45 plugs with snagless boots, TIA-568.2-D and ISO/IEC 11801 Class EA channel components, RoHS and REACH compliant. 10GBASE-T to 100 m and PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) supported by the construction. Six colours for circuit identification. Lengths from 0.15 m to 5 m as standard.

Typical Applications

Top-of-rack and end-of-row 10 G patching, Wi-Fi 7 access point cabinets, edge enclosures where space is the constraint, and broadcast or AV racks that move frequently and need the weight down. Also the default choice when you are retrofitting an existing cabinet and the patch manager is already overstuffed.

Build Options and Ordering

Length in 0.5 m steps or to your measurement, colour, boot profile, print legend and packing format are all selectable. If your runs are longer than the PoE derating allows, we will quote standard 23 AWG Cat6A instead. Send us the planned run length and the PoE load, and we will confirm reach and derating before quotation. Bulk reels and retail packaging are both available.
