Cat6A Slim Patch Cord, 28AWG S/FTP, Low-Profile Boot
Filling Rate and Airflow First
In a fully loaded 48-port 10G switch, the patch leads themselves become the problem: standard Category 6A cables are thick enough to block airflow across the panel and to make the rear of the rack impossible to work in. This Cat6A slim patch cord is built around a 28 AWG S/FTP construction with a reduced outside diameter, so the same port count occupies materially less space and leaves the switch fans something to move air through.
The Trade-Off, Stated Plainly
Thinner conductors mean higher DC resistance and higher insertion loss. That is physics, not marketing. The practical consequence is that slim Category 6A leads are intended for short runs in the rack, and that they need to be accounted for in the channel budget rather than treated as a free substitution for a 23 AWG cord. They are also the wrong choice where a bundle of leads carries significant PoE current over length, because the resistive heating is concentrated in a smaller cross-section with less jacket material to dissipate it. Derating guidance for powered bundles should be confirmed against the supplier data before filling a panel this way.
Construction
- Conductor: 28 AWG stranded copper, S/FTP, four pairs
- Outside diameter: approximately 4.5 mm
- Boot: low-profile, snagless, no latch guard to catch on adjacent leads
- Bandwidth: 500 MHz design target
- Lengths: 0.15 m to 5 m
- Colours: six standard options for circuit identification
Where It Belongs
High-density 10G top-of-rack and end-of-row switches, Wi-Fi 7 access point cabinets, edge compute enclosures, and any panel where the rear cable management is sized for a smaller bundle. It is not a substitute for horizontal cabling runs; keep it between the patch panel and the switch, or the switch and the server.
Ordering
Supplied in the standard colour set with mixed-length packs available for a full cabinet build. Send the port count, panel depth and the equipment being patched, and the length mix can be worked out so that slack does not end up coiled in the management arms.
