Cat5e CMP Plenum Patch Cord

A cat5e cmp plenum cord is rated for air handling spaces: CMP and FT6 to UL 910, 24 AWG solid copper, low smoke flame retardant jacket for drops above ceilings and under raised floors.

Description

Overview

A cat5e cmp plenum cord is the version you specify when the cable runs through the building air path: above a dropped ceiling, under a raised floor, or inside any plenum that moves return air. The jacket is a low smoke flame retardant PVC compound rated CMP and FT6 to UL 910, which is what an inspector looks for when checking compliance with NEC Article 800. Electrically it is still a four-pair, 24 AWG Category 5e channel with 100 ohm impedance, and the pairs are swept well beyond the 100 MHz the category requires, which leaves real headroom for Gigabit Ethernet and the applications that run on top of it.

Plenum, riser or general purpose: which rating does the route need?

The rating is a fire-performance classification, not a data-performance one, and it is set by where the cable runs. Getting it wrong is one of the most common reasons an inspection fails, and the fix means pulling the whole run out and replacing it.

RatingWhere the code expects itWhat the test addressesConsequence of getting it wrong
CMP – plenumAir handling spaces: above dropped ceilings, under raised floorsFlame spread and smoke generation in a plenumFailed inspection and a full replacement pull
CMR – riserVertical shafts between floorsFlame spread up a vertical runNot acceptable in a plenum; fails inspection
CM / CMG – generalOrdinary horizontal runs inside a floorGeneral flame resistanceNot acceptable in a plenum or a riser
LSZH – low smoke zero halogenTransit, tunnels and enclosed public spaces; sometimes specified instead of CMPSmoke density and halogen acid gasMay not satisfy the plenum requirement on its own – check the local code

Where the route is unclear, or where a job will be inspected by someone else later, specifying CMP removes the argument. The cable costs more per meter than the callout does, and nowhere near what a re-pull costs.

Why the rating is about smoke, not just flame

Cable in a plenum is cable in the building air path. If it burns, whatever the jacket gives off travels through the ceiling void and into occupied rooms, and in most fire incidents it is the smoke and the combustion products, not the flame front, that do the harm. Plenum-rated compounds are formulated to limit both flame spread and smoke generation, which is why the requirement is written into code rather than left to preference.

  • The whole run has to carry the rating, including the cords inside the plenum, not only the bulk cable.
  • Keep the markings legible. The rating is printed on the jacket; if it is scuffed off, the inspector cannot verify it.
  • Document what was installed. Photographs of the jacket marking before the ceiling closes settle arguments cheaply.

Installation limits worth writing on the drawing

Plenum cable is not fragile, but it does have limits and they are routinely exceeded on a busy site. Pulling tension is quoted at 25 lb and the minimum bending radius at 1.0 inch for this construction. Pull hard enough and you stretch the conductors and shift the impedance; bend it tightly enough and you deform the pair geometry at that point and create a return-loss fault that no amount of re-termination will fix.

  • Support the run along the route rather than pulling it around corners under tension.
  • Respect the minimum bend radius at every corner and at the panel.
  • Leave a service loop rather than pulling the run tight between supports.

Where a cat5e cmp plenum cord gets installed

  • Drops above suspended ceilings in offices, schools and hospitals
  • Runs under raised floors in data rooms and trading floors
  • Any air handling plenum where return air moves through the cable route
  • Healthcare and education projects where the inspector checks every jacket marking
  • Retrofit work where the original route is unknown and CMP removes the risk
  • Projects that also need low smoke performance, where our Cat5e UTP LSZH Patch Cord is the alternative compound

How to specify the build

  1. Rating required – CMP, or another class if the route is not a plenum.
  2. Length of each cord, and whether they are all the same.
  3. Color, and whether colors code for a service or a floor.
  4. Boot style – snagless as standard, or slim for dense panels.
  5. Acceptance test – channel or permanent link, and to which category.
  6. Quantity, and whether this is a prototype or a production order.

Workmanship and testing

For Cat5e CMP Plenum builds the line runs to IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 under ISO 9001, terminating 32 to 12 AWG. Every Cat5e build gets a continuity and pinout check before it is boxed, and seal checking is quoted whenever an ingress rating is on the drawing.

Every production run can ship with RoHS and REACH declarations and the electrical report agreed at quotation; see certifications and material declarations. UL styles and other named approvals are built to drawing: we source to the style you specify and document it, rather than asserting a listing we do not hold. The strain relief and molded body are produced on tooling we cut ourselves see overmold tooling cut in our own tool room so the tool is quoted separately, owned by you, and available for repeat runs years later. The wider context is covered under our industrial automation work.

Custom builds and ordering

Cat5e CMP Plenum prototype lots start from 1 to 50 pcs and ship in 3 working days; production requires 500 pcs and runs 14 working days after sample approval. Tooling not already held adds around 10 working days. Your part number and labeling go on OEM and ODM Cat5e shipments, and material certificates with first-article reports are available.

What is listed here for Cat5e CMP Plenum builds is the industry-standard definition, not a measurement we took on a finished part. What your assembly is built and verified to is what your drawing states, confirmed against the supplier datasheet before a quote goes out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use riser cable in a plenum if it is only a short run?

No. The rating follows the space, not the length. Any cable in an air handling plenum has to be plenum rated, and short runs are exactly what inspectors catch.

Does the plenum rating change the data performance?

No. It is a jacket and compound requirement. The four-pair Category 5e electrical performance is the same construction underneath.

Do the patch cords need to be plenum rated too?

If they are in the plenum, yes. The requirement applies to everything in that space, not just the bulk cable on the reel.

Is LSZH the same as CMP?

No. They are different tests addressing different hazards, and one does not automatically satisfy the other. Check which one your local code and your inspector require.
