Cat5e UTP Retractable Patch Cord (350 MHz, 24 AWG, Auto-Wind Reel, T568B)

A cat5e utp retractable patch cord on a compact auto-wind reel, 24 AWG stranded copper, T568B and snagless boot. For benches, service kits and demo setups.

Description

Overview

A cat5e utp retractable patch cord trades a little electrical margin for the one thing a bench actually wants: no cable on the floor. The reel is a spring mechanism, and the spring is the part that wears out — not the conductors. Knowing that changes how you specify it and where you put it to work.

What the reel does to the cable

Cable inside a reel is pulled straight, held under tension, wound back and released, over and over. That duty is closer to a moving application than to a patch panel, and it drives three build decisions: stranded conductors rather than solid, a jacket that survives rubbing against the housing, and a strain relief at each end doing more work than it would on a straight cord.

What wears out first

When a retractable cord stops working, it is almost never the copper. Four parts fail, in roughly this order.

PartFailure modeWhat you see
Return springLoses tension over cyclesCord stops retracting fully and hangs slack
Latch or stopPawl wears, detent rounds offCord will not hold at the length you pulled
Cable at the exitAbrasion and repeated flexingLink drops when the cord is jiggled
RJ45 latchRepeated unpluggingPlug will not stay seated in the jack

Cycle life is a stated figure, not a guess. If your application has a required number of extension cycles, put it on the order and we will build and verify to it. Otherwise treat the reel as a convenience mechanism rather than a rated component, and keep one spare on the bench.

Where a retractable cord belongs — and where it does not

  • Belongs: workbenches, burn-in racks and repair fixtures
  • Belongs: field service kits and commissioning laptops
  • Belongs: demo and training setups that pack away every night
  • Belongs: hot-desk and shared test positions
  • Does not belong: permanent structured cabling, or anything inside a wall or ceiling
  • Does not belong: rack dressing, where a fixed-length cord is tidier and cheaper
  • Does not belong: PoE devices left extended for months at a time

Cable and connector

Stranded conductor, snagless boot, and gold-plated contacts on the modular connector — the same interface as any other patch cord, which is the point. A retractable cord has to work in the same ports as the straight ones in the drawer. Wiring is T568B unless you say otherwise, and the cord is continuity and pinout tested after the reel is assembled, not before.

Typical applications for this cat5e utp retractable patch cord

  • Bench test positions for network equipment
  • Field service and commissioning laptops
  • Demo carts and training rooms
  • Hot-desk positions in shared labs
  • Instrument and tool leads — our Coiled Retractable Cable covers the non-Ethernet versions

How to specify your build

  1. Extended length and the retracted length that fits your drawer.
  2. Required cycle count, if this is a rated application.
  3. Conductor and jacket — what the cord will rub against.
  4. Wiring — T568B default.
  5. Boot — snagless or standard.
  6. Quantity and whether you need labeling or retail packaging.

Workmanship and testing

Assembly and inspection follow IPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3 workmanship criteria under our ISO 9001 quality management system, and every unit is 100% continuity and pinout tested before it is packed. Conductor range is 32 to 12 AWG. Cycle testing to a stated count can be quoted on the production batch. Where a standard sets a limit for the category, the connector interface or the jacket, that is the industry-general definition of the rating. The values your assembly is built and verified to are the ones stated on your drawing, per order.

Every production run can ship with RoHS and REACH declarations and the electrical report agreed at quotation; see certifications and material declarations. UL styles and other named approvals are built to drawing: we source to the style you specify and document it, rather than asserting a listing we do not hold. The strain relief and molded body are produced on tooling we cut ourselves see the overmold tooling we build in-house so the tool is quoted separately, owned by you, and available for repeat runs years later. Custom builds and ordering

Reel bodies are stocked in several sizes; custom housings add tooling time. Prototype builds start from 1 to 50 pcs and ship in 3 working days; production orders start at MOQ 500 pcs and ship 14 working days after approval. New tooling adds about 10 working days, and we hold 100 sets of mold tooling in house. OEM and ODM builds ship under your part number and labeling, with material certificates and first-article reports on request. Factory audits and video line tours of our Longgang, Shenzhen plant can be arranged through Alan Kang.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pull cycles does the reel last?

It depends on the mechanism and the extended length. Give us a required number and we will build and verify to it rather than quoting a generic figure.

Can I leave it extended permanently?

You can, but it is the worst case for the spring. A fixed-length cord is a better choice for anything that stays plugged in.

Does the reel affect the Ethernet link?

The cable inside is shorter than the extended length suggests, so it is well inside a normal patch run. Treat it as a short patch cord.

Is it Cat5e or Cat6?

We build both. The reel is the same; the cable and the termination change.
