Cat8 Ethernet Patch Cord, S/FTP 22 AWG, 25/40GBASE-T to 30 m
A cat8 ethernet patch cord is a short-reach component, and that is the whole design brief. Category 8 exists for 25GBASE-T and 40GBASE-T inside a cabinet or across an aisle, not for structured cabling across a floor. The quoted construction is four pairs of 22 AWG in S/FTP, foil on each pair under an overall braid, tested to 2000 MHz. If your run is longer than the channel limit, buy fibre or a different category rather than hoping a heavier cable will stretch it.
Where the 30 metres actually goes
Category 8 channel performance is defined to ISO/IEC 11801 Class I and ANSI/TIA-568-C.2-1 over a 30 m channel. In practice that budget is spent quickly: competitor data reads it as a 24 m permanent link plus two 3 m patch cords, which is one patch at the switch and one at the server. If your permanent link is longer, the patch allowance shrinks with it. Measure the routed path, add the vertical distance up and down the rack, and then choose the lengths. This is why most of these cords are ordered at 1, 2, 3 and 5 m rather than at the lengths people buy for desktops.
Shielding and grounding
At 2000 MHz the screen is not optional decoration. Every pair is foiled and the whole bundle is braided, and the cords use screened plugs with a metal shell so the braid is carried through the connector rather than stopped at the boot. The consequence is that the equipment at both ends has to provide a grounded shielded port: an ungrounded screen turns the cord into a radiator and you lose the margin you paid for. Check that both the NIC and the switch port are shielded and bonded before blaming the cable.
Connector choices
The standard mating face for Class I is the familiar RJ45, which keeps these cords backward compatible with existing 1G and 10G equipment in the same rack. Competitor ranges also list GG45 and TERA style plugs for Class II installations. Those are different interfaces with different mating hardware, so they are worth specifying only if the installed base already uses them.
Installation reality
Cords at this gauge are stiff. Respect the bend radius at the connector exit and across the cable manager, because a hard kink at 2000 MHz costs you margin that no amount of shielding recovers. Do not bundle them so tightly that the weight of the bundle distorts the pairs at the plug, and keep them out of the same bundle as the cabinet power whips.
